A Ph.D., an illustrated introduction

Matt Might, computer science professor at the University of Utah, has a very clear-cut and elegant way of showing what getting a Ph.D. means.

A dent in the universe?

So basically look at it this way, imagine this circle contains all of human knowledge:

Tabula rasa.

After elementary school, you have learnt a little…

… and a bit more after high school (though many at that age are convinced they know a lot more than that):

Then university life starts: you start specializing during your undergraduate years:

The speciality deepens during your masters degree:

Reading papers takes you to the edge of human knowledge:

You push at the boundary for a few years:

Until one day, the boundary gives way:

That dent youve made is called a Ph.D.

Of course, the world looks different to you now:

So don’t forget the bigger picture:
